How to Beat the First Flock of the Seraphim Boss
A Map 1 route that treats the ten-minute clock as the exam, not a surprise.
Steam discussions already include a bare “Map 1 help” thread, and the store page tells you why: a normal crusade is built to present a boss around the ten-minute mark. This guide is the exam version of Getting Started. It assumes you can move and pick up an angel. It does not assume you know when to stop opening chests.
The first boss is not a raid lockout. It is a check that your flock can delete a large target while the remaining horde still exists. If you arrive with three identical close-range angels and no line damage, the check fails even if your highlight reel looks holy.
What “Map 1” is asking
Players say Map 1 when they mean the opening arena and the first named threat at the end of the clock. Steam now also names Cathedral, Club, and Hell as Hazard Level 2 stages; those later doors live on Maps and Hazards. The wiki will not invent a subtitle the game UI does not print. Use the in-game name you see on your pause screen, then apply this route anyway: stay mobile, feed the flock, and keep one weapon that can hit a tall target from more than arm’s length.
Reviews mention a large alt or goth demon-girl boss who tries to step on you. Treat that as flavor and as a hitbox warning. Big bodies occupy space. Standing under a stomp to “DPS” is how a ten-minute run becomes an eight-minute run.
Minute 0 to 4: do not roleplay a collector
Take the first angel. Take the second if it covers a different range. Ignore the urge to reset because the hair or face roll was ugly. Skins are a hub problem; the skins page can wait.
Spend those minutes learning spawn pockets. The most useful negative review of launch week is not “the game is short.” It is “I got telefragged and could not prevent it.” You prevent some of it by never camping the last kill. After a clump dies, step aside. The next wave often writes itself on the corpse pile.
Loot is allowed. Greed is not. If a chest sits inside a fresh spawn ring, leave it. In-run loot explains why crosses and boxes feel loud. This page only cares that you are alive at minute six.
Minute 4 to 8: build a two-range flock
You want at least one close clearer and one long poker. Shotgun plus rifle is the boring pair that works. Dual swords plus bow is the stylish pair that also works if you walk into clumps. Three RPGs look like Kaboom achievement bait and feel empty when the boss starts moving.
Passives matter more than matching outfits. Split Shot, pierce, and reload are the three words that save a late clock. Skim Passives and Stats if a card text is opaque, then pick the card that covers a hole. Do not pick a fourth close-range angel because the portrait is cuter.
If you already have a favorite stack, confirm it on starter builds instead of inventing a new religion mid-run.
Minute 8 to the roar: stop farming
The last two minutes are for position, not for one more chest. Players asked for longer cross animations because they miss pickups in the mess. That is a UX complaint. Your job is still to be elsewhere when the boss lands.
Clear a lane. Put your back toward a wall only if you can still sidestep. Keep the line angel facing the tall target. If you use melee, approach from the side after the first stomp, not from under the foot.
Health recovery and Radiating Glow-style auras help here because they buy a mistake. They do not buy a second mistake. If you are already wobbling, spend the last chest on sustain or damage, not on a novelty stat you have not read. The stat glossary is for the hub, not for a roaring arena.
After the kill
A first clear is the unlock that matters. Check kept angels, then decide whether you are done for the night or whether you are rolling into Endless Mode. Endless is a different exam: same arena language, worse spawn math, thinner late items.
If the boss never appeared, you either died to the clock or you are in a mode that changed the timer. Do not assume the fight is bugged until you have survived ten minutes with a living nun. If the client died instead of the nun, that is the crash fix again.
Write one sentence about what actually killed you: spawn pocket, empty magazine, or a stomp you stood in. The next run only needs to fix that sentence. Everything else can wait for the angel tier list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How long until the first boss?
Official copy says about ten minutes on a standard run. Longer clocks appear at higher difficulty and in Endless.
I die before the boss. Is that a Map 1 bug?
Usually it is a spawn pocket or an all-melee flock. Strafe off corpse piles and keep one long-range angel.
Should I open every chest on the way?
Open safe chests. Skip any box sitting inside a fresh spawn ring. Greed is the most common eight-minute death.
What do I do after the first clear?
Check kept angels, spend a little meta currency, then either stop or read the Endless guide.
